The following staff are available to supervise honours and masters research in the Wana research group.
A/Prof Luba Volkova
Luba Volkova is an ARC Industry Fellow focusing on smoke from bushfires and the role of coarse woody debris in smoke production. More generally, her work focuses on fires and forest management and their impact on forest carbon and greenhouse gas emissions from southern Australian forests and Indonesian peat fires.
Project topics:
- Mapping coarse woody debris (CWD); CWD decomposition, emissions and combustion;
- Peatfires and restoring degraded tropical peatlands.
- Forest carbon balance and carbon recovery following fires.
A/Prof Christopher Weston
I am interested in forest net productivity, nutrient and carbon cycles, the effects of fire on forest carbon balance, black carbon formation and the impact of climate change on forest fuel accumulation. Current projects focus on the recovery of Eucalyptus forests from fire and the impacts of thinning and prescribed fire on fuels and soil organic matter, including long-lived black carbon.
Project topics:
- Eucalyptus forest time-course of understorey fuel re-accumulation in relation to overstorey stem characteristics.
- Tropical plantations – review of between rotation residue management to maintain soil organic matter, nutrient retention properties and soil moisture holding capacity.
- Forest regrowth following fire – reconciling on-ground and remotely-sensed spectral measures of recovery.
